Foundation Training for Beginners: You Don’t Need to Get in Shape Before You Start

New experiences can feel intimidating. Workout classes are no exception. It is easy to wonder if you are ready to take the first step and sign up. Most of the time the barrier is not the interest to attend but the need to feel in shape before committing.

Trust me, I have been there. I have talked myself out of many workout classes over the years thinking I would embarrass myself. I was worried that I would not be strong enough to finish the workout. I recognize that walking into an unfamiliar room can be intimidating, especially when it seems like everyone else is an expert, when really someone else might be new as well.

While it is important to recognize this, I think it speaks volumes to the current state of our fitness industry. It is great that we share what a class entails through marketing and videos but in the process we have discouraged people from starting because they believe they might never be able to do that.

A fitness class should be a space where everyone feels comfortable embracing the learning process. Did you walk into your first math class with all the answers? No. This is the same thing just more fun.

There Is No Wrong Place to Begin

Everyone enters their first Foundation Training class with a different starting point.

We are each on our own fitness journeys and need to embrace that. Even if someone may have exercised for years, they are embracing this work for the first time after realizing their body needs something different. Someone else may be returning to movement after a long time away. You may be managing pain, rebuilding confidence, or simply looking for a way to feel more comfortable in your body.

None of those starting points is wrong and all are respected at True Line Fitness.

Foundation Training is not about proving what your body can do or keeping up with the person next to you. It gives you an opportunity to understand how your own body moves. Through breath work, anchoring, and hinging, you begin to recognize patterns that are specific to you and practice new ways of supporting yourself both inside and outside of class.

That process is going to look different for everyone.

Sometimes a movement may come naturally following the initial explanation, or it takes time before you can actually feel it in your body. You may need to hear a cue more than once. You may have a question specific to your body. There may be days when something feels clear and other days when it does not.

That does not mean you are behind. That is what learning looks like.

Meet Your Body Where It’s At

You do not need to be pain-free, perfectly coordinated, or familiar with fitness to start Foundation Training. You also do not need to wait until you feel stronger or more flexible. Please do not overthink this.

My role is to help you understand the work and find an appropriate place to begin. Your job is to arrive as you are, embrace the work, and listen to your body. This is the environment we work to create at True Line Fitness. Our Foundation Training classes in Madison, WI, and online are designed to help you learn about your body without judgment or pressure to perform. We want you to ask questions and take the time you need. Most importantly, we want to remind you that you belong in this space.

You do not need to become anyone else before you are worthy of that opportunity.

You do not need to get in shape before you start. Beginning is how you learn what your body needs, build trust in how it moves, and create a foundation for whatever comes next.

You are allowed to begin exactly where you are. We hope you join us in class.
