Progress Is Happiness

Yellow balloon with a smiley face floats against a gradient background of pink to blue, conveying a cheerful mood.

As we step into a new year, I find myself sitting with a simple but powerful question:

What actually makes you happy?

Not in a big, abstract way but in your day-to-day life. How do you feel when you are spending your time the way you spend it?

I was recently listening to a podcast where someone was asked that exact question: What makes you happy?

Their answer inspired me.

“Progress.”

Not perfection.

Not achievement.

Not a finish line.

Progress.

And the more I thought about it, the more it resonated especially when it comes to our bodies, our health, and the way we move through the world.

Why Starting Is So Hard

So often, we don’t start something new because we are scared.

We don’t know how it’s going to feel.

We worry we won’t be good at it.

We are unsure if we will stick with it.

In my last blog post, I talked about sustainable change, about how real, lasting transformation starts with taking the first step. But there is another piece that matters just as much: how you feel while you are making that change.

Because progress, true progress, feels good.

It brings those “aha” moments of:

  • “Oh… I get it now.”

  • “Wow, that feels different.”

  • “Something just clicked.”

And one of the most beautiful things about Foundation Training is that those moments don’t stop after a few weeks or months. They can happen years into the practice.

The Deeper You Go, the More You Feel

One of the greatest gifts of this work beyond pain relief, strength, posture, and resilience, is that the more you practice, the deeper your awareness becomes.

The deeper you activate.

The more clearly you feel your body working.

The more connected you become to how your body actually wants to move.

I remind clients in class all the time:

This is your body. This is your workout. Go at a pace that feels right for you.

Your body knows what it needs on any given day.

It knows where it needs strength.

It knows where it needs length.

It knows how to support you through the rest of your day whether that is work, family, training, or simply living.

And no, it’s never perfect.

Progress Doesn’t Mean “Feeling Great” Every Day

I have been practicing Foundation Training for almost 15 years. I start every morning with a meditation, and I always include some Foundation Training within that space.

Woman in blue activewear stretches outdoors by a lake, surrounded by rocks and grass, with a distant city skyline at sunset.

And there are days when I take my first hinge or forward fold and think:

  • “Uffda… I’m tight today.”

  • “Okay, my hips aren’t happy.”

  • “This needs some attention.”

But here is the thing: that awareness is progress.

Just choosing to show up.

Just deciding to hinge.

Just taking a breath and meeting your body where it is.

That’s forward movement.

That’s growth.

That’s happiness.

Feel Progress Beyond the Workout

Foundation Training is more than a 45-minute class. It shapes how I lift weights, how I sit at my desk, how I drive in my car and how I move through my day.

It also shapes how I teach.

One of the greatest joys of my life is teaching this work and watching members of the True Line Fitness community get stronger, more confident, and feel more at home in their bodies. Helping people feel progress, not just see it, is deeply meaningful to me.

Because when your body feels strong, open, stable, and balanced, joy becomes easier to access. Sappy I know. It’s true though.

So, as we embark on this year…

I invite you to ask yourself:

  • What makes you happy?

  • What brings you joy?

  • How do you want to feel when you’re experiencing those moments?

My hope is that you are not in pain.

That you feel supported by your body and not limited by it.

That you feel capable, grounded, and strong.

Foundation Training is an incredible body of work that helps make that possible.

Taking the first step, signing up for a class, trying something new, committing to your body is progress. And progress, it turns out, is happiness.

Think about it.

Our minds and bodies crave challenge. They crave growth. This work offers that and so much more.

Join us in class.

Feel the difference.

Make progress.

I look forward to working with you!

Any my theme for the year of "less is more" is right in line with this post - don't focus on the end game / goal, but rather the journey. Each smaller step is significant and can provide more joy-giving effects than the arrival. LOVE this post, J. Thanks for the happiness!

Interestingly, my theme for this year, not a resolution but the theme I want to carry into the year, is 'open and move forward'. FTL is one of my guides.
