The Reset We All Need This Season

Updated: 2 days ago

Clouds form the shape of human lungs against a bright blue sky, evoking a peaceful and airy mood. No text is visible.

As the seasons change, our bodies and minds start to crave a reset. The air feels cooler as you hesitate whether to pull out that long winter jacket to stay warm on your commute to work or walk with the dogs. I don’t know about you, but these last two months have flown by and at points felt like a blur. Suddenly this new season is in full swing, the holidays are here, and before you know it, 2026 will arrive and you will wonder where the time went. Don’t let that happen to you. Give your body the reset and strength it deserves to carry you through this season.

Why the Friday ramble?

  1. I wake up early and enjoy writing in the morning before the rest of the world wakes up.

  2. I spend a lot of time in the car listening to podcasts, and a recent episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast on stress and overwhelm caught my attention.

I’m not here to reiterate the differences between stress and overwhelm. I encourage you to hear it directly from Mel and the experts she brought on Episode 335, “If You’re Feeling Overwhelmed, You Need to Hear This.” Instead, I want to share a key takeaway that deeply connects to Foundation Training and the power of our breath because when it comes to managing those moments of stress and overwhelm, our breath is one of the most effective (and accessible) tools we have.

I know this might sound obvious, but breathing is a biological system that has both voluntary and involuntary control. We were given this incredible gift of breath from our first inhale to our last exhale and our bodies instinctively know what to do. The parasympathetic nervous system helps slow our breathing to maintain calm, while the sympathetic nervous system steps in to give us extra oxygen when we need it most. The beauty lies in the fact that we can consciously influence both.

When life feels overwhelming or you experience moments of stress, many of us respond by holding our breath or breathing shallowly into our chests. That short, tight breath tells your body you are under threat and your body remains in fight or flight mode. Over time, that shallow breathing reinforces tension, poor posture, and fatigue. That is not ideal. This is where Foundation Training comes in. You have an opportunity to intentionally shift how you breathe!

Decompression breathing is more than about breathing deeply, it is about breathing expansively. Through practicing Foundation Training, you learn to use your breath to create space as you lift your ribcage away from your pelvis, elongating your torso, and activating the muscles that support your posture. With every inhale, you are not only bringing oxygen into your body, but you are also creating space as you reinforce alignment, stability, and strength. With every exhale, you release tension and maintain that beautiful space you just created.

Decompression breathing is simple but not always easy. It requires practice, as with anything in life. However, you can reset your nervous system in just a few minutes through practicing this work and as a bonus you will be strengthening your entire body as well.

I love teaching this work and watching everyone feel the difference in their daily life. It is time we appreciate our breath, understand its power, and practice decompression breathing to take full advantage of our body’s capabilities.

Join me in class for a full 45 minutes of decompression breathing with Foundation Training and feel stronger, calmer, and ready to embrace all that you have coming up in this exciting season of life.
